Meet Debra Jason, Direct Response Marketing Copywriter

Have you ever spent years studying for a degree? Then, received that degree and worked in your field only to discover that the path you were on didn’t fuel your soul?

That was me.  And, it took me a while to admit it. After all, between undergrad and graduate school, I had spent six years studying to become a speech pathologist. When I got physically ill, my body was telling me, “It is time for a change.”

Fast forward several years, and a couple of career changes, I discovered the art of copywriting. Thanks to a couple of wonderful mentors who encouraged my craft, I decided that I wanted to pursue this path. However, at that time, Colorado was in a recession. Times were tough, really tough.

Everywhere I went looking for a job, I repeatedly heard, “Sorry; we’re not hiring. We’re laying people off right now, Debra.”

The Birth of a Copywriting Business

In addition to “We’re laying people off right now,” many of those people also said, “Debra, we can’t hire you as an employee, but if you were to freelance, we could use your services.”

I took this as a sign from above. It was my opportunity to grab the bull by the horns and start my own business as a direct response copywriter. I had always said that I wanted to own my own business, but I never really knew what that was going to be. Funny how life turns out.

On January 1, 1989, The Write Direction was born.
